Robison Orthodontics Mesa AZ Open Bite and Dental Braces

OPEN BITE and Dental Braces

An Open bite occurs when your front teeth, do not make contact with each other, giving the illusion that your mouth is never really closed. Thumb sucking and tongue thrusting are habits that can affect the development of open bite, as can speech problems such as lisping and genetic misalignment of the upper and lower jaw.

Open bite is not a common problem, and if you are seeking treatment most likely you do so for appearance. However, if you have a moderate to extreme open bite treatment is needed because the condition can affect the joints of the jaw and cause recurring pain.

Robison Orthodontics Mesa AZ Reasons For Dental Braces

Reasons For Dental Braces

There are plenty of Medical and Cosmetic reasons why a person should get Dental Braces. One of those reasons is the Spacing between your teeth. The most common concern of patients with excessive tooth spacing is poor appearance.

Spacing:
The exact opposite of crowding, spacing means exactly what it sounds like, that there is too much space between your teeth. Spacing occurs in approximately 5% to 10% of the population and could be caused by thumb sucking or genetics, such as inheriting a large jaw and small teeth.

Spacing may affect all of your teeth, or just a portion of them. Sometimes teeth simply don’t grow in, or if the dental arch is very wide, leaving spaces between the teeth. The space between the teeth is usually too big and this can cause any number of problems including the ability to bite down
and chew food well.

Your Dental Braces can sometimes irritate your cheeks and lips especially when you’re eating.  Knowing how to fix the problem or when it’s time to call Dr. Robison for an appointment is crucial you don’t want to further prolong your treatment.  Orthodontic wax makes an excellent barrier between the braces and cheeks, lips, and tongue. Simply pinch off a small piece wax and roll it into a ball, then flatten the ball and place it completely over the irritating area. Drying the area first can help the wax stick better.
