Your Dental Braces can sometimes irritate your cheeks and lips especially when you’re eating.  Knowing how to fix the problem or when it’s time to call Dr. Robison for an appointment is crucial you don’t want to further prolong your treatment.  Orthodontic wax makes an excellent barrier between the braces and cheeks, lips, and tongue. Simply pinch off a small piece wax and roll it into a ball, then flatten the ball and place it completely over the irritating area. Drying the area first can help the wax stick better.

Pokey Archwires

One of the issues you could have with your Dental Braces is poking wires. The main wires are shaped specifically to fit around the arch into the bracket slots. Dental Braces move your teeth by applying pressure that comes from the archwire and guides the direction of the teeth movement. When it comes to poking wires there are couple of situations that could occur. Listed below is just one of those situations with instructions on what you could do to try and remedy the problem on your own at home

Main Archwire Out Of Tube

The main archwire is fitted into the slots in the brackets or through the tubes in which are the very back brackets with your Dental Braces.  If the main archwire comes out of the tube the first thing you should try is putting the wire back into the tube with a pair of sterile needle nose pliers or tweezers.  If you cannot reinsert the wire back into the tube the second thing you should try is placing a piece of special wax over the archwire that is out of place. If the archwire is long and poking you, use the special wax as well. If both of these techniques are unsuccessful then the wire can be cut with either sterile wire cutters or nail clippers, close to the back of the brace. Remember cutting the wire is only to be done as a last resort.

With Dental Braces and all orthodontic appliances, breaking or damaging them is always a possibility.
Depending on the problem and discomfort level your having with your dental braces will determine if you can fix it yourself and wait till your scheduled appointment or if a visit to Dr. Robison right away is necessary. 

Some issues you may have with your Dental Braces are broken brackets, broken wires, loose bands, or wires sticking out. But, the most common would be a broken bracket.

A bracket is the metal or ceramic piece attached to each tooth by a composite resin.

Foods And Things To Avoid

Dr. Robison will tell you NO sticky or hard foods, you are told this for a reason. Sticky or hard foods can cause the resin to break or weaken. If this happens your bracket can come loose, poke your gums, cheek, or tongue, even biting on your nails or chewing on pens or pencils can cause your bracket to break. Dr, Robison will give you a special wax after he has placed your Dental Braces, this wax can be used for broken brackets or wires to keep them from rubbing on your cheek or gums. Also, a broken bracket can cause unwanted tooth movement which can result in a longer treatment time.

The Forsus Appliance procedure takes only one visit with no extra lab work.   The Forsus Appliance is placed in the back of your mouth, so it is hardly seen, and rarely does it irate your cheeks.   This appliance also requires no daily adjustments, because the Forsus Appliance is always applying a constant light force to move your jaw and teeth into their correct alignment, even while sleeping.   The Forsus Appliance works with your existing Dental Braces and wires, so you may not have to change treatments that were already planned.

Dr. Robison uses the E-space lower holding arch appliance mostly on children who have lost their teeth too early and in need of  preventive dental care. The E-space lower holding arch is almost always followed by Dental Braces.

While wearing Dental braces it is important to know what foods you can and cannot eat. Eating foods that you are not supposed to can lead to wires and brackets being broken, this can be very painful while causing the needed for longer treatment.

Foods to Avoid completely when wearing Braces:

•    Caramel and gooey chocolate bars
•    Very sticky or chunky peanut butter
•    Hard candies
•    Nuts
•    Chewy candy, taffy, and gummy bears

Careful when eating with orthodontic dental braces:

•    Chewy bread such as bagels – tear into small pieces
•    Chips – eat them carefully and one at a time
•    Corn on the cob – cut off the cob

•    Soda and sugary drinks – avoid these whenever possible, as drinking too much can cause tooth decay
•    Eating anything with hard bones in them.

Mesa Orthodontist Children’s Braces Appliances Hyrax Palatal Expander

A Hyrax Palatal Expander is an appliance used as part of pre-braces treatment.

A Hyrax Palatal Expander is an appliance that widens the upper jaw so the bottom and upper teeth will fit together better. The palatal expander is mostly used for children since their jaw bone is still growing, in some cases it has been used on adults.
**For adults the palatal expansion is more uncomfortable due to the fact that their jaw bone is done growing.

When using the Palatal Expansion, a gap between the two upper front teeth might appear, this is not the same for all patients. This gap will close by itself and the teeth could overlap which will cause the need for Dental Braces.

To tighten the Palatal Expander, you will receive a key from Dr. Robison, which will tighten the screw, you may have a little bit of pressure on your teeth. Some patients develop a space between the two front teeth as they turn the Palatal Expansion appliance. This space can vary, it may be large or a space may not even develop at all. For the first couple weeks after getting the Palatal Expansion appliance applied it may be difficult to eat or talk. After the Palatal Expander is removed some patients say that their mouth feels very comfortable and has lots of space.
